KNOWLEDGE AND ADOPTION OF RECOMMENDED PRODUCTION PRACTICES OF POTATO AT DAILEKH, NEPAL

ABSTRACT

Potato farmers in the Dailekh district face challenges in adhering to the recommended package of practices. These include improper planting distances, inadequate use of fertilizers, minimal intercultural operations and limited pest and disease management measures. By addressing this research gap, this study examines the knowledge and adoption of recommended potato production practices in the Gurase and Dhungeshwor Rural Municipalities of Dailekh District. A household survey of 120 farmers, selected using a simple random sampling technique, was conducted in 2024. Data analysis was done employing descriptive statistics, logistic regression, and ranking methods that highlighted the adoption rates of improved agricultural practices, the factors influencing them and the problems faced by farmers in potato cultivation. The results revealed that although the majority of farmers were aware of improved potato varieties, the adoption of other recommended practices remained low. Key factors influencing adoption included education level, membership in agricultural groups, visiting or getting advice from the extension worker and contact with extension workers. Major constraints identified were the lack of technical knowledge, irrigation facilities, timely availability of inputs, and marketing challenges. The study highlights the importance of strengthening extension services, increasing farmer training opportunities, and promoting locally tailored interventions to enhance access to resources and knowledge, ultimately aiming to improve productivity and livelihoods in the region.
